  • If You are not having Fun, then You are not Living

A friend recently told me that "If you are not having fun, then you are not living". I did not say anything, but every cell in my body disagreed with her statement. I was literally speechless in shock for a moment.

At first, I thought my friend is very selfish if she truly believes that the only way to live is by having fun. After thinking about it for a few days, I came to the realization that not everyone is altruistic or selfless. Sure, we are all selfish to a different extent, but I always assumed that everyone has some pleasure in helping other people even if it is not fun. And even if a job is not fun, there is some pleasure in doing a good job or providing a service to others.

To put it another way, we often hear that life is the path we choose and not the destination. Having fun is only a part of any path. We may stop to smell the roses from time to time, yet we must march forward eventually. Life is full of struggles and accomplishments that are not fun, yet we often look back at them with fondness and nostalgia.

Maybe I am just taking my friend’s words too seriously or too literally. I hope so.
