  • Why We Must Act to Prevent Global Warming

There are only two possible realities concerning global warming. Either global warming is real or fake. And there are only two possible courses of action. Either act to prevent or mitigate global warming or take no action whatsoever.

Therefore, there are four possible scenarios that might happen, so let’s place these four possible scenarios in a grid to help determine the possibly outcome of each scenario.

Global Warming is Real Global Warming is Fake
    Act to Prevent or Mitigate
       Global Warming
    ???
    ???
Do Not Act to Prevent or
       Mitigate Global Warming
    ???
    ???
    Table #1

The first scenario assumes global warming is real and humanity tries to prevent or mitigate it. The best possible outcome for this scenario is that civilization is saved. The worse possible outcome for this scenario is that civilization collapses. So, the chart is filled out accordingly:

Global Warming is Real Global Warming is Fake
    Act to Prevent or Mitigate
       Global Warming
    Civilization is either
    saved or collapses.
    ???
Do Not Act to Prevent or
       Mitigate Global Warming
    ???
    ???
    Table #2

The second scenario assumes global warming is not real and humanity still tries to prevent it. Therefore civilization stays intact, but lots of money is spent to prevent something that doesn’t happen.

Global Warming is Real Global Warming is Fake
    Act to Prevent or Mitigate
       Global Warming
    Civilization is either
    saved or collapses.
    Civilization survives,
but a lot of money is wasted.
Do Not Act to Prevent or
       Mitigate Global Warming
    ???
    ???
    Table #3

The third scenario assumes global warming is real and no one acts to prevent it. Therefore, civilization would be destined to collapse.

Global Warming is Real Global Warming is Fake
    Act to Prevent or Mitigate
       Global Warming
    Civilization is either
    saved or collapses.
    Civilization survives,
but a lot of money is wasted.
Do Not Act to Prevent or
       Mitigate Global Warming
    Civilization collapses.
    ???
    Table #4

The final scenario assumes global warming is fake, and no one acts to prevent it. Therefore, this causes no change to civilization and no money is spent uselessly.

Global Warming is Real Global Warming is Fake
    Act to Prevent or Mitigate
       Global Warming
    Civilization is either
    saved or collapses.
    Civilization survives,
but a lot of money is wasted.
Do Not Act to Prevent or
       Mitigate Global Warming
    Civilization collapses.
Civilization survives with no spent money.
    Table #5

Since humanity has no control over if global warming is real or not, then the options for humanity is to act or not act to prevent global warming. If humanity acts to prevent global warming whether real or not, then there is a greater than 50% probability that civilization would continue to survive. However if humanity does not act to prevent global warming whether real or not, then there is a 50% probability that civilization would survive and a 50% probability that civilization would not survive. Additionally, money spent trying to prevent global warming is not as important as trying to save humanity.

Therefore, it does not matter if global warming is real or not. Logic dictates that we must act to prevent it either way, because there is a greater probability for humanity to survive if we try to prevent global warming.

NOTE: Even though I did not think of this idea first, I did improve on the original idea, and it is worth repeating.
