How to Gain Weight

(from One Geek to Another)

In my opinion, there are two types of geeks. Fat geeks who eat badly and get little exercise, and skinny geeks (as I was) who defy the laws of nature who also eat badly and get little exercise. So, I wanted to give four recommendations to my fellow geeks and nerds on how to gain weight.

  1. First and most difficult is get a girlfriend, wife, or significant other. Once your significant other moves in with you, your eating habits will change drastically. For example, you will eat more healthy meals. Your meals will be more consistent. You will start eating the fabled "breakfast" meal. Your refrigerator will magically contain fruits and vegetables again.. okay.. for the first time.

    Almost immediately, your partner will try to "cure" you of this supposedly severe medical aliment. Your partner will continuously try to get you to eat something when you are not hungry, such as putting food in front of you when you are on the computer or watching TV. Also be wary of those late night snacks, because they will make you very sleepy and knock you out earlier than normal, and then those hearty breakfasts start appearing.
  2. Second, try weight lifting for about 30 minutes every other day. After about one month, you will notice a big different. Just be careful to not do too much cardiovascular exercising, since that burns fat and could make you lose more weight than you are gaining. Donít worry, your significant other will "motivate" you on this one too, or maybe getting a girlfriend after bulking up a bit is a better incentive to gaining some weight.
  3. Third, eat more calories. Try adding about 250 to 500 calories to your daily diet. The easiest way to do this is by slightly increasing the portions of what you already eat. If necessary, start counting your calories like dieticians do.

    Make sure you eat plenty of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables; while not eating more junk food since this will only put on fat. My personal favorite is having a granola bar as a snack between meals. Some people prefer drinking protein shakes, but that only works when weight lifting a lot.
  4. My forth and final suggestion is the easiest. Get older. Thatís right. When we get older, our metabolisms typically slow down, but our food consumption does not. And of course, we then gain weight.

I hope my four simple recommendations help you gain the weight that you are hoping for.
