The Pros and Cons of Tankless Water Heaters

Deciding between a regular or traditional water heater versus a modern tankless water heater can be a daunting task. To help you choose what is better for you, here is the list of the pros and cons of a tankless water heater.

The Advantages of Tankless Water Heater
  1. Lower Monthly Cost: In a regular water heater, water is continuously heated even when not needed. However with a tankless water heater, water is only heated when it is needed. As a result, the monthly electrical cost for a tankless water heater is significantly lower than a regular water heater.

  2. Environment: Since tankless water heaters use less energy, they are much more environmentally friendly.

  3. Unlimited Hot Water: Tankless water heaters do not run out of hot water as traditional water heaters.

  4. Smaller Size: Tankless water heaters are smaller in size when compared to regular water heaters, thus tankless water heaters provide more available space in basements, garages, etc.

The Disadvantages of Tankless Water Heater
  1. Cost: Tankless water heaters currently cost more than tradition water heaters; however with economies of scale, their prices are decreasing and will continue decreasing. Additionally, tankless water heaters cost more to install too. As a result, tankless water heaters are only cost effective in the long term.

  2. Speed: Tankless water heaters typically take a much longer time to reach desired hot temperatures. This is also a common issue with regular water heaters too.

  3. Environment: As a result of tankless water heaters being slower than regular water heaters, more water is wasted.

  4. Number of Users: With a larger number of users of a single tankless water heater, water temperatures can quickly vary.

  5. Too Hot: Tankless water heaters can more easily burn with water that is too hot.

Now that you know more about tankless water heaters, I hope it is easier for you to decide to get one or not.
